What is Spirulina?

Spirulina is a natural, freshwater algae (or cyanobacteria) that’s one of the oldest microorganism on the planet. It wasn’t until recent years that spirulina sparked interest from athletes, nutritionists and sports professionals for its powerful effects on athletic performance, endurance, weight loss, the immune system and mental health. Spirulina is often mixed into food to supplement existing diets and is rarely consumed on its own.

What's in spirulina?

Fresh SimpliiGood Spirulina algae is made of 74% complete protein with 18 amino acids, which play a crucial role in almost all biological functions of the body. Fresh SimpliiGood Spirulina contains all eight essential amino acids not made by the human body and delivers a more complete source for 10 of the 12 nonessential amino acids that are synthesized by your body.

SimpliiGood Spirulina also contains gamma linolenic acid (GLA), the important omega-6 essential fatty acid with disease-fighting abilities. It’s also a great source of vitamins, including vitamin B-1 (thiamine), B-2 (riboflavin), B-3 (nicotinamide), B-6 (pyridoxine), B-9 (folic acid), vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin A and vitamin E; as well as high concentration of vital minerals such as potassium, calcium, chromium, copper, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium, sodium, zinc and bio-available iron.

Why is spirulina so green?

Spirulina’s rich, colorful bio-chemistry has a wide range of health benefits that increase your body’s functional performance. Chlorophyll, the green pigment that gives spirulina its color, helps to regenerate damaged liver cells and remove toxins from your blood and organs. Phycocyanin, the blue pigment found in algae, improves liver function, reduces inflammation and helps the body digest amino acids. And Porphyrin, a deep purple pigment, forms the protein-rich hemoglobin that’s essential for healthy red blood cells to carry metabolic processes throughout the body.

Is SIMPLIIGOOD Spirulina toxin free?

We grow our spirulina on reverse osmosis purified water and constantly apply advance monitoring protocols to verify we are 100% free of cyanotoxins, heavy metals, pesticides, and microbiological contamination and our facility is ISO, HACCP, and BRC certified. These harmful substances usually occur in products that are cultivated in an uncontrolled environment, hence contamination occurs.

In addition, we have developed innovative testing assets through cooperation with leading academic and private research institutes to ensure our spirulina is truly pure. We are also involved in an eco-engineering pilot program aiming to mitigate harmful algae blooms, which contain toxins like microcystin, anatoxins, and BMAA by manipulating the algae populations and introducing dense cultures of Spirulina which are toxin free.

How is SIMPLIIGOOD Spirulina different from other protein sources?

Raw SimpliiGood Spirulina is 74% complete protein, with all essential amino acids in perfect balance. (Beef, in comparison, is 22% protein.) In contrast to other meat or plant-based protein sources, fresh spirulina lacks hard cellular walls, making spirulina protein and its amino acids much easier for your body to absorb.

How is SIMPLIIGOOD Spirulina different from dry spirulina?

Most dry Spirulina is processed using a spray-dry method with hot gas, which converts spirulina slurry into powder form. This process deteriorates the algae molecule and results in reduced nutritional values and enzymes — the latter of which causes spirulina’s notorious odor and taste. Dry spirulina’s short shelf life means that an additional 40-50% of its nutritional value is lost roughly 45 days after it has dried. Some studies suggest that dried spirulina has only 15% of the nutritional potency of fresh spirulina.

Is SIMPLIIGOOD Spirulina organic?

SimpliiGood Spirulina is grown under organic conditions in freshwater pools in a closed, controlled system. It is not exposed to outside contaminants like industrial waste, air pollution or acid rain that is often found in open environments. However, only foods grown in soil can meet USDA’s guidelines for the organic classification.
